The Farm at Walker Jones shares its bounty… and you can get in on it!

Admittedly, I am kind of in love with DC’s second ever urban farm, right at the corner of K and New Jersey, NW. I keep wandering down there on my bicycle to dig around, help out with a lesson, harvest, and sometimes even bring along 50-some cyclists (as I did for the urban farms bike tour featured in the Summer 2011 Bittersweet Zine). At one point last month I found myself up to my elbows in dirt, helping to build a butterfly garden with native plants alongside other volunteers, students, and community members:

(No, I’m not in this shot. I prefer to be behind the camera.)

Anyway, if you’re at all interested in learning about sustainable agriculture, or want to help this awesome urban farm/school garden by doing a little weeding, or just want to get your hands on delicious, fresh, and inexpensive, organically-grown produce — no, that is not an oxymoron, you read that right — walk yourself down to Walker Jones Farm, which provides fresh produce on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays in two ways:

Work Exchange:
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1pm-6pm and Sundays from12-4pm the farm is open to the public for community volunteer days. Anyone is welcome to lend a hand with various farm tasks and in exchange, you will be given a selection of the day’s produce. Bring your own bag!

Farm Stand:
Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm-6pm and Sundays from 2pm-4pm our farm stand will be open, beginning July 3rd. We will be selling freshly harvested produce and cut flowers at extremely low prices. All profits support the school farm.

More details are here. See you there!
